Finding Your Style: A Guide To Finding Your Personal Style.
November 5, 2020
Ahh yes, personal style. Well I could just go ahead and assume that we all understand what personal style’s about and then we could just go along with that and go straight on to the steps needed to find it. However I can’t take that approach because I can’t ignore the fact that there are people who are only just hearing about the term personal style for the first time right now. For that reason, I’ll have to carry everyone along and explain what personal style is all about; after all I can’t help you find your personal style if you don’t even know what it’s all about.
When I talk about personal style, I’m referring to your ability to express yourself via your wardrobe. You remember that old saying “dress as you wish to be addressed”, well this is one of the scenarios when it comes to play. After all, a lot can be said about you from the way you dress and just so you know; your style makes up a good part of the first impression you leave on someone. To be honest, I can take a guess at what kind of personality an individual possesses through the kind of outfits they wear and the way they accessorize (yes it is possible, this is just to give you an idea of what personal style is all about). To summarize this long talk and give you something you can stick with, I’ll drop this quote below;
“Your personal style is the representation of your personality through your wardrobe.It refers to the way you choose to express yourself through your fashion choices”.
Okay, so now that we’ve gotten that over with (if you didn’t get the definition,let me know in the comments or via the contact form on the contact page and I’ll be glad to clarify ), it’s time for us to actually go on to discuss the steps involved in defining our personal style. But before that, I’m going to mention something; a reason why you should care about defining your personal style which is the fact that your style represents you and if you want to put your best foot out and make a really good impression on others. Just in case you’re not aware; your personal style is an expression of who you are or in Rachel Zoe’s words..
“Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak”.
Now…how can you define your personal style. Some people may use different terms like find or develop to mean the same thing but to me they’re three different things as you have to first of all find your style, then go on to define it and make the vague idea clearer before going on to develop the defined idea and bring your style into existence. So how do we go about this process? Well in this post I’m going to be giving a quick and easy guide to finding and defining your personal style so let’s begin…
How To Find & Define Your Personal Style.
1.) Get to know yourself: To put this simply,figure yourself out. Try and learn more about the kind of personality you possess and the multiple facets of it. After all, if you’re going to define your personal style then you have to make sure it represents your personality as your style is an expression of yourself. So it’s best you take out the time to understand your personality before going on to define your style.
2.) Look into your wardrobe: Once you’ve gotten to know yourself better,then go on to look into your wardrobe and see if it actually does express your personality or if it’s just a bunch of clothes in a closet with no real plan. While looking through it, pay attention to the pieces which you wear the most and the ones you wear the least; the ones that fit you more and the ones that don’t really do much for you. After which you go on to the next step which is….
3.) Purge that closet: Clear your closet of those pieces that you never really wear and let them go. You can get rid of them by either giving them away or by selling them off (as second hand clothes) which are more beneficial than just throwing them away which is not only a waste of clothes but is also contributes to polluting the environment.
4.) Start searching: Now that you’ve made some space in your closet,it’s time for you to go online and search for outfits that you think would relate to your style. For this I would recommend you use Pinterest as it allows you to create a board where you can save those items to (pin them) for whenever you want to go shopping.
5.) Okay,time to build: Now that you’ve gotten your vague idea (in the first two stages) and defined it using your Pinterest, it’s time for you to develop and bring your style to life by going out for a good old shopping spree where you get to buy the wardrobe pieces that reflect your style. A pointer I’ll give you here is to set your budget and stick to it so you don’t lose track and overspend.
6.) Maintain your style: You’ve brought your style to life and created a wardrobe that suits it perfectly, now you have to maintain that wardrobe and make sure it still reflects your style. If you’re interested in knowing how to do this,then I’d recommend you’d check out the eBook I’ll be releasing by the end of this month as I discussed this in as much detail as I could).
7.) Just have fun with it: When defining your personal style, it’s best if you actually allow yourself to have fun with it and not go all formal with it as there is nothing formal about expressing yourself through your style as that is something you’re meant to have fun with and enjoy. So just do you in the end,that’s the best way to go.
And that brings us to the end of this short style guide post as well as the official kickoff of The Fashionable Eve series that I’ll be running this month, a series that’s mainly consistent of style tips intended to help you out with your personal style and other fashion related issues. Now I know this post is short and a bit lacking but that’s because I actually wrote an eBook where I explained this topic in a much more detailed way. If you’re interested,the eBook will be officially released on November 28th (just had to do something for my birthday yunno). For now you can head over to this page where I gave details about the book while I take my leave and go on to plan for the next posts as well as the eBook release which I am so excited about. Feel free to let me know what you think of this post and if there is anything you want me to talk about in any of the next posts. For now, it’s bye loves…until later.
Yours truly, Arreta
